17th century FRENCH SCHOOL - Lot 239
17th century FRENCH SCHOOL The Resurrection of Lazarus Oil on canvas. H_60 cm W_34.9 cm Framing. Inscription on back "This painting was donated by Mr. Osiat [?], place Ouen N°5 to the Maison de Charité rue Bourg l'Abbé N°28 Rouen on March 3, 1803". This scene, taken from the Gospel according to Saint John, illustrates one of the most famous miracles of of Christ. Lazarus, still wrapped in his shroud, emerges alive from the coffin he had occupied for several days. Although of the same dimensions as La résurrection du fils de la veuve de Naïm (The Resurrection of the Widow's Son) in this sale, it is probable that the two compositions are not by the same hand. This painting is part of the Parisian Atticism movement, represented by Laurent de La Hyre Hyre, Eustache Le Sueur and Jacques Stella. Like them, the artist drew his inspiration from the classicism of Nicolas Poussin, both in the eloquent depiction of figures and in the juxtaposition of primary colors, creating a striking contrast.
