Hyacinthe RIGAUD (1659-1743), Atelier de - Lot 221
Hyacinthe RIGAUD (1659-1743), Atelier de Portrait of a Genoese lord in armor Canvas 90 x 79 cm (112 x 97 cm with frame) Period carved and gilded wood frame Old restorations, original canvas and stretcher Carries a fragment of handwritten inscription "Jean-François de la Guiche de Saint Gérand...". Provenance: private collection This fine portrait of a nobleman in three-quarter armor is a work from the workshop of Hyacinthe Rigaud. The lively treatment of the face and the meticulous attention to detail of the armor and fabrics are directly reminiscent of the style of Rigaud and his workshop. The sitter's proud attitude, powdered wig and confident gaze are typical of the ceremonial portraits of the high nobility in the early 18th century. The identity of the sitter is not known with certainty, but the elegance of the costume and the importance given to the armor suggest a high-ranking figure, probably a Genoese nobleman or an officer from a patrician family of the Republic of Genoa, which had close ties with the great European courts. Foreign patrons frequently called on Rigaud's studio for prestigious French-style portraits.
