Jacopo AMIGONI (1682-1752) - Lot 209
Jacopo AMIGONI (1682-1752) Portrait of Nicola Porpora (1686-1768), composer Oil on canvas. H_80 cm W_64.5 cm Nicola Porpora was one of the most renowned composers of his time. Master and friend of the famous castrato Farinelli, he also trained Joseph Haydn. We know that these three great figures of the Italian Baroque traveled to the European courts at roughly the same European courts. In France, the influence of French portraitists on Amigoni, notably Nicolas de Largillierre particularly that of Nicolas de Largillierre (1646-1756), is evident in this work. Jacopo Amigoni is one of the great masters of 18th-century Venetian Baroque. An accomplished painter painter, he traveled through the courts of Europe, immersing himself in the various styles he encountered. Renowned for the quality of his portraits, he painted many of his friend friend Farinelli. We know that Amigoni accompanied the great Castra on his trip to Versailles in 1736, where he gave a successful concert. During this period, the composer and friend of both artists artists, was working in London and produced a portrait of the same composition as our painting. This shows the link between the Parisian influence on the painter and the portraits portraits from this period and was sold at Sotheby's on July 3, 1996, lot 141, in London. It is seen by Dr. Annalisa Scarpa Sonino, a specialist on the painter who has since passed away, for whom the composition's French influence is unquestionable, thus enabling it to be the time of the Versailles trip in 1736. Although the portrait was once thought to belong to an anonymous artist, it is now clear Farinelli wearing a French-style wig. Our painting, therefore, uses a similar composition, but with Porpora's features. Amigoni thus depicts his two friends with similarities, reinforcing the close bond between these three major Baroque artists. A veritable rediscovery, this portrait is a link between the arts, and further materialises the proximity between music and art. between music and painting.
