PRINCE IMPÉRIAL (Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, known as le). Aut - Lot 458
PRINCE IMPÉRIAL (Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, known as le). Autograph letter signed "Louis-Napoléon" to his grandmother, the Comtesse de Montijo. S.l., [probably 1863]. 2 pp. in-8 in pencil. "My dear grandmother, I hope to be back in Paris soon in a few days. I can't wait to see you. It's been a long time since I've seen you. We haven't had any good hunts this year, but I'll enjoy myself when I get back to Paris. I kiss you with all my heart. Your most affectionate and respectful grandson Louis-Napoléon. P.S. I am very well." MOTHER OF EMPRESS EUGENIE, THE COMTESSE DE MONTIJO Maria Manuela Kirkpatrick y Grévigné (1794-1879) was the daughter of a Scottish consul to the United States in Malaga, and married the youngest member of a prominent Spanish family, the Comte de Montijo. After his death in 1839, she led a social life in European high society, notably in Paris, where she became closely acquainted with Prosper Mérimée (to whom she provided the anecdote behind Carmen). For many years, she maneuvered to secure beautiful marriages for her daughters, one of whom became Duchess of Alba and the other Empress of France. However, Napoleon III dismissed her from the court because of her free-spirited reputation, and she retired to her Spanish estate at Carabanchel.
