the count of ornano made marshal of france - Lot 457
the count of ornano made marshal of france ORNANO (Philippe-Antoine d'). Letter signed "Mal d'Ornano" to his "dear general". Hôtel des Invalides, April 5, 1861. One p. in-8, lithographed letterhead "Cabinet du gouverneur". "I am very sensitive to your eagerness to congratulate me on my appointment. I AM PERSUADED THAT THIS PROMOTION OF AN OLD FRIEND FROM 1812 HAS GIVEN YOU GREAT PLEASURE, and has brought you back to our old memories of half a century ago. As for me, I was delighted to see that you had not forgotten me any more than I have forgotten my old comrades from that time. Thank you once again, my good General, and please accept the assurance of my most affectionate feelings..." VETERAN OF THE EMPIRE WARS, PHILIPPE-ANTOINE D'ORNANO (1784-1863) WAS BORN IN AJACCIO TO A FATHER OF ANCIENT CORSICAN NOBILITY AND A MOTHER FROM THE BONAPARTE FAMILY. Having embraced a military career, he served in Saint-Domingue (1802), Ulm (1805), Jena (1806), Spain, Russia (1812, where he fought at La Moskowa and was wounded at Krasnoy) and Germany (1813). Placed at the head of the Old Guard after the death of Marshal Bessières, he again fought in the French campaign (1814) and remained loyal to the Empire during the Hundred Days (1815). HE MARRIED MARIE WALEWSKA, WHO HAD BEEN THE EMPEROR'S MISTRESS, AND ADOPTED THEIR SON. He was showered with honors under the Second Empire, becoming a senator, Grand Chancellor of the Legion of Honor, Governor of Les Invalides, and Marshal of France in 1861.
