NAPOLEON III. - Lot 454
NAPOLEON III. Autograph telegraph dispatch signed at the top "The Emperor", to Grand Duke Constantine, then viceroy of Poland. Fontainebleau, July 4 [1862]. 1/2 p. in-8. "WE ARE OUTRAGED BY THE ATTACK ON YOUR IMPERIAL HIGHNESS. Please let us have your news...". GRAND AMIRAL AND BROTHER OF THE TSAR, GRAND DUKE CONSTANTIN Nikolayevich Romanov (1827-1892) made a state visit to France in 1857. A liberal who was behind the imperial decision to emancipate the serfs in 1861, he aroused strong animosity and, on July 3, 1862, was the object of an attempted assassination: the pistol shot at point-blank range was cushioned by his epaulette.
