NAPOLEON PRINCE-PRESIDENT - Lot 453
NAPOLEON PRINCE-PRESIDENT NAPOLÉON III (Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, future). Letter signed "Louis Napoléon" as President of the Republic to Joachim Ambert. Palais des Tuileries, June 8, 1852. One p. folio; margins a little foxed. "Monsieur le colonel, JE NE METS PAS OBSTACLE À CE QUE VOUS PORTIEZ LE TITRE DE BARON QUE L'EMPEREUR [NAPOLÉON Ier] AVAIT DÉCERNÉ AU GÉNÉRAL DE DIVISION AMBERT VOTRE PÈRE, et à ce que le souvenir des services qu'il a rendus à la France soit ainsi perpétué dans votre famille..." GENERAL, POLITICAL MAN, HISTORIAN AND ADVERTISER, JOACHIM AMBERT (1804-1890) served in Spain, Belgium and Algeria, and was promoted to the rank of general in 1857. He spent several periods in New Orleans and Guadeloupe. A GENERAL OF THE REVOLUTION AND THE EMPIRE, HIS FATHER JEANJACQUES AMBERT (1765-1851) was a veteran of the American War of Independence in the Navy, who transferred to the army and fought as a division general at Kaiserslautern under Hoche in 1793, and at the siege of Luxembourg under Jean-René Moreaux in 1795. However, close to generals Jean-Victor-Marie Moreau and Charles Pichegru, he was removed as governor of Guadeloupe, dismissed in 1808, and only returned to service in 1813. Allied to the Emperor during the Hundred Days, he was not sidelined during the Restoration, and retired in 1832 to Guadeloupe, where he owned land and chaired the Colonial Council from 1833 to 1845: he was one of the supporters of the emancipation of the slaves, although in favor of compensation for the colonists.
