PRISONER AT HAM FORT - Lot 452
PRISONER AT HAM FORT NAPOLÉON III (Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, future). Autograph letter signed "Napoléon Louis B" to Calixte Souplet, editor of the newspaper Le Guetteur de Saint-Quentin. "Fort de Ham", May 26, 1844. 3/4 p. in-8, address on spine, eagle-armorial seal retained; marginal tear to address leaf due to opening without damage to text. Held prisoner at Ham in the Somme after his attempted uprising in Boulogne-sur-Mer in 1840, Prince Napoleon-Louis Bonaparte devoted himself to studies, the writing of various works, and initiatives designed to strengthen his networks and win political sympathies on all sides. "I would like to express my deepest sympathy for the loss you have just suffered. You must realize that deeply touched by the many proofs of sympathy you have given me since my captivity, I cannot remain a stranger to any of the happy or unhappy events in your life. It is therefore with deep sorrow that I learned this morning of the death of Mr VOTRE PÈRE, THIS VENERABLE DEBRIS OF OUR GLORIOUS ERA; may the fine reputation he leaves behind him and the idea that a host of your fellow citizens share your regrets, soften your regrets! Receive, Sir, my compliments of condolence as proof of my feelings of esteem and sympathy for your person... " THE SON OF AN OFFICER WOUNDED AT IENA, THE REPUBLICAN JOURNALIST CALIXTE SOUPLET (1810-1867) visited the illustrious prisoner at the Fort de Ham on several occasions, and in 1843-1844 hosted various contributions by the latter in his newspaper Le Guetteur de Saint-Quentin - 25 articles in which the future Napoleon III defended some of his ideas, such as "L'Extinction du paupérisme", and attacked Louis-Philippe Ier.
