THE CAPITULATION OF PARIS, MARKING THE END OF THE WATERLOO C - Lot 444
THE CAPITULATION OF PARIS, MARKING THE END OF THE WATERLOO CAMPAIGN WELLINGTON (Arthur Wellesley, future Duke of). Apostille signed "Wellington", in French (Gonesse, July 4, 1815, 2 lines, with red wax armorial seal) on a manuscript leaf signed by Felton Elwell HERVEY-BATHURST, Karl von MÜFFLING, Louis-Pierre-Édouard BIGNON, Pierre-Marie Taillepied BONDY and Armand-Charles GUILLEMINOT (s.l.n.d., 1/2 p. in-8 oblong, red wax armorial seals of the five plenipotentiaries). Framed under glass. A MOVING FRAGMENT OF THIS MAJOR DOCUMENT IN THE IMPERIAL EPIC. THE "CONVENTION DE SAINT-CLOUD". After the Homeric Battle of Waterloo, which saw France defeated on June 18, Napoleon I returned to Paris on June 21, signed his abdication the following day and left the capital on June 25. The French army, including Marshal Grouchy's fresh troops who had retreated in good order, had regrouped under Marshal Davout. Davout, in his capacity as General-in-Chief, sent plenipotentiaries to confer with the Allies who had reached the outskirts of Paris, in order to negotiate an armistice. They were Baron BIGNON, Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Provisional Government, General Count GUILLEMINOT, Chief of Staff of the French Army, and Count BONDY, Prefect of the Seine. They met at Saint-Cloud with the plenipotentiaries of the Prussian and British armies, General Major Baron von MÜFFLING and Colonel Baronet HERVEY-BATHURST. This capitulation, renamed a "convention" at Fouché's request, was mainly drafted by the experienced diplomat Baron Bignon, and signed by the plenipotentiaries on July 3, in three "expeditions" for ratification. On July 4, after a conference between Talleyrand, Fouché and Wellington, the three "expeditions" were ratified by the generals-in-chief of the three armies present, including, as here, the Duke of Wellington.
