TO THE FATHER OF THE DUCHESS OF DINO - Lot 443
TO THE FATHER OF THE DUCHESS OF DINO TALLEYRAND-PÉRIGORD (Charles-Maurice de). Letter signed "Ch. M. Tal. pr. de Ben." with 3 autograph lines, addressed to Alexandre Batowski in Warsaw. Château de Finkenstein [now Kamienec in Poland], May 12, 1807. 1/2 p. in-4, address on back, red wax seal with Empire coat of arms retained; marginal tears to address leaf due to opening without damage to text. "I hope, my dear Batowski, to see you here again soon. The Emperor has accepted the commission's offers, and he will receive you with pleasure. I'm not talking about the pleasure I'll have in being with you again: it's a feeling you made me accustomed to in Warsaw, and which camp life has not taken away from me. I renew to you the assurances of my sincere attachment. [In his own handwriting, Talleyrand added:] Mr Stanislas will keep his lodgings for you. If you come quickly, you will find him at Rosenberg [now Susz], one place before Finkenstein. Talleyrand, seeking to secure a wealthy marriage for his nephew Edmond, had set his sights on the young Dorothea von Biron, natural daughter of the Duchess of Courland Dorothea von Medem and Alexandre Batowski, who had been a nuncio (deputy) to the Polish Diet and a captain in Napoleon's army. However, Duke Peter von Biron had recognized the young Dorothea, and she had become one of Europe's wealthiest heiresses. The marriage would take place in 1809, but the couple would not be happy: she who would later be known as the Duchesse de Dino, would in fact become the last companion of Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand himself.
