"THE MONTH OF VENDÉMIAIRE WILL NOT PASS WITHOUT VERY GREAT E - Lot 438
"THE MONTH OF VENDÉMIAIRE WILL NOT PASS WITHOUT VERY GREAT EVENTS..." NAPOLEON I. Letter signed "Napol" to Jean-Jacques-Régis CAMBACÉRÈS, "De mon camp impérial de L[o]uisbourg" [Ludwigsburg near Stuttgart in the kingdom of Württemberg], 12 vendémiaire an XIV [4 octobre 1805]. 2/3 p. in-4. Export certificate enclosed. BEAUTIFUL LETTER EXPRESSING HIS CONFIDENCE IN THE SUCCESS OF HIS CAMPAIGN, written at the start of the brilliant turning maneuver that would enable him to stop the Austrian army at Ulm before its junction with the Russians. "My cousin, I am very pleased with the Elector of Wirtemberg and with the general spirit of Germany. There is great irritation everywhere against the English, and pity for the conduct of the House of Austria. I have joined forces with the Bavarian army. I also have with me troops from Wirtemberg and Baden. THE WEATHER IS SUPERB. ALL MY COLONIES ARE ON THE MOVE; and the month of Vendémiaire will not pass without great events...". Here, Napoleon I cites his three southern German allies, Duke Frederick II of Württemberg and Margrave Charles-Frederick of Baden, made prince-electors in 1803 thanks to France, as well as Duke Maximilian-Joseph of Bavaria, also a prince-elector. All three sided with him against Austria in 1805, and were rewarded: under the Treaties of Brünn (today Brno near Austerlitz) and Presburg, the Dukes of Bavaria and Württemberg became royalty, while the Margrave of Baden was made a sovereign Grand Duke. They joined the Confederation of the Rhine. Napoleon I, Correspondance générale, Paris, Fayard, vol. V, 2008, no. 10954.
