IMPORTANT LETTER FROM MOSCOW - Lot 431
IMPORTANT LETTER FROM MOSCOW DUMAS (Mathieu). Autograph letter signed as intendant general of the Grande Armée, addressed to Amédée de Pastoret, intendant of Vitebsk. MOSCOW, October 11, 1812. One p. 1/4 in-4, address on spine, vestige of red wax seal; address leaf with tear due to opening without damage to text, and with trace of tab. "I had the honor of inviting you... to contract with contractors of the government you administer TO SUPPLY SMOLENSK'S PLACE WITH FOOD AND BESTIALS; I have reason to believe that you have already taken care of this object and that you will very shortly be in a position to give me an account of the treaties you have made.... I must inform you that in order to put into this operation all the activity that the Emperor desires, I have instructed the senior employees of the three subsistence services to go to the governments of MOHILOV and WITEPSK in order, under the superior direction of Mr. the Commissary of SMOLENSK, to make contracts for the major supplies of this place and to replace you in this part. I instruct them to visit you and ask you for any information that might help them in the course of their mission...". Mathieu Dumas (1753-1837) began his career as an officer under the Ancien Régime, serving among others as aide-de-camp to Rochambeau in the United States, then to La Fayette at the start of the Revolution - he was responsible for bringing back the royal family arrested at Varennes. He then took part in the Second Egyptian Campaign (1800), the Wagram Campaign (1809), the Russian Campaign (1812) and the German Campaign (1813), before being taken prisoner in Leipzig and returning home in 1814. He rallied Napoleon I during the Hundred Days, but continued his political career under the Restoration and the July Monarchy. He was a deputy to the Legislative Assembly, a member of the Conseil des Cinq-Cents, a Conseiller d'État under the Consulate, and Joseph Bonaparte's Minister of War in Naples.
