In 1868, he successfully exhibited his first painting with a military theme, La Halte des tambours, at the Salon. During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, he enlisted in an infantry regiment and took part in the fighting for the defense of Paris. Having seen the war up close, first alongside the combatants and then as secretary to General Appert, he became a faithful chronicler of it. With great attention to detail, he portrayed the heroic deeds of the French army and described the soldiers' daily lives. After evoking the war, he went on to champion the new army created by the reforms of 1872, chronicling the many aspects of military life. After 1890, he increasingly dealt with subjects drawn from the Napoleonic epic. His work was widely distributed through engraving and the press.
