Edouard DETAILLE (1848-1912) - Lot 189
Edouard DETAILLE (1848-1912) Panorama of Rezonville: infantryman escorting two wounded men on horseback to the ambulance. Oil on canvas, fragment of panorama signed lower right. 55 x 48 cm. Large rocaille gilded stucco frame with brass cartouche "E.DETAILLE" (numerous chips). Provenance : - Probably lot 94 of the June 16, 1896 sale, which has been re-cut into four. Bibliography: -Adrien Moser, Le souvenir de 1870 dans les panoramas d'Edouard Detaille et Alphonse de Neuville, in Les Carnets de la Sabretache, Carnet Spécial 2020, pages 101 to 104. -François Robichon, Les panoramas de Champigny et Rezonville par Edouard Detaille et Alphonse Deneuville, in Bulletin de la Société d'Histoire de l'Art Français, 1981. History: A monumental and mythical work (120 meters long and 14 meters high), the panorama was created by the two great French military painters of the late 19th century: Edouard DETAILLE and Alphonse DE NEUVILLE. Produced around 1880, the panorama was exhibited in Vienna, Paris and Berlin until 1895. It was then cut up and resold in 1896. Our fragment corresponds to the part of the panorama detailing the ambulance on the battlefield, easily recognized by the red-cross flag flying over the building.
