H.GIRAULD (1810-1876), after Bellangé - Lot 146
H.GIRAULD (1810-1876), after Bellangé The last square: Cambronne at Waterloo Oil on canvas (craquelures, small accidents not affecting the subject) signed lower left 83.5 x 64 cm. Gilded frame with cartouche. Attached lithograph after Bellangé Historical background: Cambronne began the Belgian campaign (1815) by refusing an appointment as division general. At Waterloo, the British ordered Cambronne to surrender: "The guard dies but does not surrender!" he is said to have replied. He refuted the now-legendary phrase, commenting philosophically: "I couldn't say 'the Guard dies and doesn't surrender', because I didn't die and I surrendered." (the surrender is not exact, since he was seriously wounded and captured).
