1980 TALBOT-MATRA RANCHO - Lot 62
1980 TALBOT-MATRA RANCHO - Registration: French - Serial number : 557216 - Engine: 4 cylinders 1442 cm³ (Simca base) - Color : Brown (the model's emblematic color) - The very first popular SUV in history. - A prophetic vision: the look of adventure, the intelligence of design. - Beautiful condition, a true piece of French industrial design. It's not often that a car can lay claim to an entire segment of the global market. Yet such is the case with the Rancho. Long before the Toyota RAV4 or the Nissan Qashqai, Matra invented the concept of the affordable family leisure vehicle. In 1980, when the 4x4 was still rustic or elitist (Range Rover), Philippe Guédon, Matra's visionary boss, proposed a genius alternative. Based on the observation that motorists dreamed of escapism and "adventurous" style without the need for complex and costly all-wheel drive, he created the Rancho. The recipe was brilliant: on a Simca 1100 base, Matra grafted a cubic polyester rear module offering immense load volume, raised the ground clearance and added raw plastic protections. The result was the first popular "crossover", a playful, all-purpose car designed for real-life families. The example we offer, chassis 557216, is a 1980 model. It's painted in a marvellous shade of brown, immediately evocative of the earth and forest walks that were the visual signature of the period. The car is in fine overall condition. It has come through the decades preserving its integrity, where many of its sisters have disappeared. Mechanically simple and proven (the "Poissy" engine), it is ready to take its new owner, not necessarily to the end of the world, but certainly on a journey back in time.
