In 1979, Honda launched the first large-displacement 2-stroke engines in competition.
In 1981, they made their series debut with the CR450 R. Honda increased displacement year by year, reaching its peak in 1984. Honda launched the air-cooled CR500R with 64 hp and 101 kg.
That year, it won the World Championship, and in 1985 abandoned air-cooling for the water-cooled version, which produced over 60 hp in its prepared version.
Production ceased in 2001.
