Johannes BORMAN (circa 1630 - circa 1670) Still life with a - Lot 209
Johannes BORMAN (circa 1630 - circa 1670) Still life with a dish of grapes, peaches and clementine on an entablature; Still life in a niche with a bunch of grapes, peaches and an orange Pair of canvases Height: 65 cm Width: 58 cm one monogrammed in the center right 'B f'. A label on the back of the Lavanchy frame in Lausanne. * Borman was most probably a pupil of Laurens Craen in Middelburg in the early 1650's. He was in Leiden as early as 1653 and enrolled in the Leiden painters' guild in 1658. He stayed in The Hague and finally Amsterdam, where he settled in 1659. He is documented there as already a citizen and member of the Amsterdam painters' guild, although he is also mentioned as a painter active in The Hague. His paintings mainly feature fruit, citrus fruits cut in half or quarters, set on stone entablatures. Transparent bunches of grapes and vine leaves with wavy edges and pronounced veins are characteristic of Borman, as are the blue hues of his velvets. Butterflies and wasps, symbols of vanity, can be found in his canvases, as on our pair.
