Coffee pot - Lot 354
Coffee pot in black Namur earthenware called "au deuil de la Reine". Spout and lid mounted with chased silver ornamentation. Marked with a lictor beam, small guarantee (1798-1809). (Repairs to neck and lid). Late 18th century. Provenance : - Galerie C. Koehler 23/04/1936. Historical background: Families who emigrated to Europe after the French Revolution mourned the beheading of Queen Marie-Antoinette. Namur's fine black earthenware is unique in late 18th-century Namur production. It is a very dark, almost black, reddish-brown hard earthenware that closely resembles fine red stoneware, with a glossy black vitrified glaze and rich, finely chased silver trim. Its color is inspired by British terracotta. The production of black earthenware tableware in Namur at the end of the 18th century was limited because it was made from a very small deposit of black clay located in Bonneville; it was intended for the aristocracy and bourgeoisie of Namur County. Coffeepots and other pieces made from this clay can be found in the collections of several museums.
