Mahogany travel set - Lot 348
Mahogany travel set in mahogany with spandrels and bronze medallion numbered LD. Gilded green leather interior. Complete with accessories. Silver trim including: an oval basin, three powder boxes, a travel tumbler, two crystal boxes with sliding lids, three toilet flasks, a case, a spoon, a funnel, a flat flask, two horn cases and a mirror. Engraved on the lock: "Fait par MAIRE fabricant de nécessaires rue Saint Honoré vis-à-vis l'oratoire, no 43 - Au Nécessaire Français près de la rue de Grenelle". Consulate period H. 13 cm - W. 40.5 cm - D. 25.5 cm B.E. (Missing box key, small tears, and hinge to be re-soldered). Biography : Pierre Dominique MAIRE (circa 1763 - 1827), also known as "marchand d'orfèvrerie et fabricant de nécessaires", was a direct competitor of Martin Guillaume Biennais, Napoleon's goldsmith. Maire called on the services of goldsmith Beaufort and "orfèvre garnisseur" Blaquière. The address shown here, rue Saint Honoré opposite the Oratoire, attests to a date of manufacture for this kit that largely predates 1801.
