LE SAGE: Le Bachelier de Salamanque, ou les mémoires de D. C - Lot 40

LE SAGE: Le Bachelier de Salamanque, ou les mémoires de D. Chérubin de La Ronda, tirés d'un manuscrit espagnol. Valleyre and Gissey, 1736. 2 vols. in-12 red morocco, ornate ribbed spines, three gilt fillets on covers, int. lace, gilt edges (Chambolle-Duru). (without the faux-tittre of Volume II) First edition. Le Bachelier de Salamanque is the last of Lesage's novels, and is said to be his favorite, the fruit of his old age. Although still in the picaresque tradition, the latter no longer rolls on multiple episodes like Gil Blas; if it shows a priori less invention, it is above all of a distinctly darker and more melancholy hue than any of his novels.Superb copy, washed and glued, established by Chambolle-Duru.
