RONSARD: Les œuvres. Buon, 1609. In-folio modern basane, spi - Lot 15
RONSARD: Les œuvres. Buon, 1609. In-folio modern basane, spine ribbed and decorated (a few brown spots and browned quires, small marginal wetness). 8 ff. 1215 pp. 6 ff. following: Recueil des sonnets, odes et hymnes...1609, 132 pp. and 1 ff. table. Partly original edition. Eleventh collective edition in which the Recueil des sonnets, Odes, Hymnes, Élégies, Fragments et autres pièces retranchées aux éditions précédentes is published for the first time, with a separate title and pagination: this collection, partly inspired by Hélène de Surgères, is placed at the end of the volume. Shared between the publishers Macé and Buon, it is divided into ten books, and also contains: the Vie de Ronsard by Claude Binet, the Oraison funèbre by Du Perron, the Eglogue by Claude Garnier and the Tombeau. Ronsard's sonnets and odes are accompanied by Nicolas Richelet's famous commentary. This edition also includes the very important Caprice dedicated to Simon Nicolas, secretary to the king and his finances. Written after June 1584, the date of the Duc d'Anjou's death, this poem marks Ronsard's rallying to Henri de Navarre, whose accession to the French throne he accepted on condition of his conversion. This edition is illustrated with an architecturally framed title-frontispiece by Léonard Gaultier, flanked by Mars and Venus and surmounted by a bust of Ronsard crowned by Homer and Virgil, and three woodcut portraits: Ronsard, Cassandre Salviatri and Marc-Antoine Muret, the poet's friend and commentator on Les Amours.
