Jean-Antoine INJALBERT (1845-1933) Marine divinity Ca. 1897 Patinated studio plaster, preparatory work for a figure on the Mirabeau Bridge Minor accidents and missing parts 62 x 40 x 41 cm Related literature : -Jean-Pierre Vanderspelden, Injalbert, Statuaire 1845-1933, catalog du fonds des ateliers de Paris et de Béziers au musée des Beaux-arts, Ville de Béziers, Musée des Beaux-Arts, 1991, p.182-185. N°inv.: 478 (3978), 480 (3980), 386 (3886) This work in patinated plaster is a preparatory study for one of the four allegorical figures the artist executed in bronze to adorn the Pont Mirabeau, built between 1893 and 1896. Holding a marine helm in her right hand, our woman corresponds to one of the two allegories facing the Seine. We know of three other versions with variations: two in terracotta and one in plaster. The Bézier-born artist, a great creator of public monuments, was awarded the Légion d'Honneur for this commission.
