LOUIS-SIMON BOIZOT (1743-1809) D'APRES. Study head of a great man Set consisting of : -Engraving by Carré, published by Depeüille in Paris year 9. 47 x 37 cm. A.B.E. (tears, wetness). -Drawing. Graphite and ink on paper. 54 x 41 cm B.E. (small tears in margins). Historical background: At the turn of the 18th century, General Bonaparte was already a celebrated figure in Paris for his victories, but between the Italian and Egyptian campaigns, few artists were able to pose him. On his return to Paris on December 5, 1797, the Manufacture de Sèvres produced the first French bust of the General, and entrusted the task to its director of sculpture, Louis Simon Boisot. However, in the sculptor's own words, this bust, which has passed into posterity, was made "from reminiscence", based on Italian drawings and plaster casts. Our engraving is based on these studies.
