EMILE NORMAND SAINT-MARCEL (1840-1914) - Lot 26
EMILE NORMAND SAINT-MARCEL (1840-1914) Equestrian portrait of Musketeer Captain Coderc de Lacam at the siege of Valenciennes in March 1677 1872 Oil on canvas 180 x 140 cm 200 x 160 cm with frame Signed and dated lower right, titled lower left. Bears the family coat of arms at top left. Born in Paris on July 11, 1840, this French painter distinguished himself through his work in several artistic fields, notably genre painting, animals and animated landscapes. A talented draughtsman, he was a pupil of renowned artists such as Decamp and Pils, as well as of his own father. His career began at the 1864 Salon, marking the start of his recognition in the art world. It is particularly rare to find a military portrait in the artist's repertoire. Here, we present one of rare aesthetic quality. The Compagnie des Mousquetaires, founded in the early 17th century, is one of the most famous military units in French history. Created under the reign of Louis XIII in 1622, it was originally an elite company charged with protecting the king and his family. Composed mainly of nobility, it was distinguished by its commitment, fighting skill and emblematic outfit, the famous muskets, firearms carried by its members, hence its name.
