Michel Hubert DESCOURS (1707-1775) - Lot 19
Michel Hubert DESCOURS (1707-1775) Bust portrait of a woman with white headdress 1760 Oil on canvas 81 x 65 cm Signed DESCOURS and dated lower left Crackling, small chip top right, lining Descours was born into a bourgeois family and trained as a painter in his hometown before moving to Paris. He is best known one of Hyacinthe Rigaud's students, giving him a solid academic training. Descours is known for his elegant portraits and gallant scenes, often painted in his signature blue cameo technique. His works adorned many aristocratic and ecclesiastical residences of the period. Among his most notable works are portraits of personalities such as François-Alexandre-Pierre de Garsault, captain of the French stud farm, and Cécile de Belzunce de Castelmoron, abbess of the Trinité de Caen. Although his work is less well known than that of some of his contemporaries, it bears witness to a refinement and technical mastery characteristic of 18th-century French art.
