RAVEL (Maurice). Autograph letter signed "Maurice Ravel" to - Lot 137
RAVEL (Maurice). Autograph letter signed "Maurice Ravel" to Marie Gaudin. 4 pp. in-8, letterhead printed with his monogram and Montfort-L'Amaury address, envelope retained. CONVERSION OF HIS "BELVEDERE" IN MONTFORT-L'AMAURY "My dear Marie, as I return to Paris tomorrow - I could count the days I've spent in Montfort over the last few months - and as I certainly won't have a moment to write to you, I hurry to wish you, before Trinity, as happy a 1923 as possible. It's getting off to an uncomfortable start for me: my frequent absences have meant that we've only been able to start installing the calo in the last few days. It was supposed to be finished by the end of the year - 1922, of course. It'll take another 2 weeks! And Le Belvédère already looks like a skimmer [Maurice Ravel bought his Montfort-L'Amaury property, "Le Belvédère", in April 1921 ]. Perhaps Annie has already been given a typewriter, which I'm afraid she will refuse to improve her writing skills. It's true that dancing doesn't leave her much time. If there's the slightest hitch in the operation of this tool, don't hesitate to send it back to me: it was presented to me as a precision machine - less complicated than the real thing, of course. So far, there's been no change to the date of the Pau concert. So, expect to see my reel on February 25 - I'll confirm my arrival in due course. In the meantime, my love to all three of you... and don't keep your wishes to yourself. Your old Maurice Ravel " The Gaudin family was very close to Maurice Ravel's mother, Marie Delouart. The composer was close friends with the Gaudin daughters, Marie (1879-1976) and Jane (1880-1979), and composed the "Rigaudon" in his Tombeau de Couperin in memory of their brothers Pierre and Pascal, who died in the First World War. Annie Courteault was Jane's daughter.
