NAPOLEON III. Letter signed "Napoleon" to General Charles-Gu - Lot 69
NAPOLEON III. Letter signed "Napoleon" to General Charles-Guillaume Cousin de Montauban, Comte de Palikao. Palais des Tuileries, Paris, March 17, 1870. 3/4 p. in-8, letterhead printed with his crowned initial and the Tuileries address, envelope retained. "You claim that I gave you my word to appoint you Marshal..." "My dear General, the Minister of War has sent me a letter you wrote to him in which you claim that I gave you my word that I would appoint you Marshal. I would like to set the record straight. I assured you of my goodwill without making any commitment to you, and warned you that I would submit your candidacy to the Council. I must not let you be unaware that I will at the same time be proposing General Lebœuf's. Please accept my sincere friendship...". General Edmond Le Bœuf, then Minister of War, was to be made Marshal on March 24, while General Cousin de Montauban, who still carried the stigma of his responsibility for the sacking of the Chinese emperors' Summer Palace, would never receive this dignity. However, he would in turn obtain the portfolio of Minister of War in April 1870 and be made Head of Government in August of the same year.
