BONAPARTE (Joseph). Autograph draft of a letter to Marshal B - Lot 43
BONAPARTE (Joseph). Autograph draft of a letter to Marshal Bertrand Clauzel. London, May 26, 1840. 3 pp. 1/4 in-4, erasures and corrections. "NAPOLEON... THE MAN I LOVED MOST..." Marshal Clauzel chaired the committee of the Chamber of Deputies responsible for raising funds to finance the Return of the Ashes and the construction of Napoleon I's tomb at Les Invalides. Joseph Bonaparte first summarized the fate of the civil list funds that Napoleon I had given to his brothers Joseph and Lucien in 1815, and then proposed to contribute to the financing of the tribute to be paid to the emperor by the government of Louis-Philippe I: "... Out of the 4 million I have at my disposal, I am allocating one million for the noble remnants of the Imperial Guard, and one million to replace the one proposed by your commission, as an expense of the credit already requested. I am convinced that Napoleon would have felt as I do, and would have done what I am doing today, he who knew very well that the sweat of the poor and the blood of the brave are the last thing one needs. If we are to meet again in the other world, Napoleon will approve of the use I am making of his trust: I am counting on you, my dear general, to properly pay the devoted homage of my feelings to the country whose sympathies for the man I have loved the most have touched me deeply...".
