RODIN (Auguste). Signed letter to Frantz Jourdain. Paris (at - Lot 35
RODIN (Auguste). Signed letter to Frantz Jourdain. Paris (at his address on rue de Varenne), September 20, 1912. One p. in-12 "CLEMENCEAU IS ALWAYS INFLEXIBLE...". "I had thought of sending something to your fine salon [Frantz Jourdain was then president of the Salon d'Automne, which he had co-founded]; but I only have the bust of Clemenceau, and the portraiture is still inflexible: impossible to exhibit! Fortunately, I can see that your exhibition is preparing for real success. Yours faithfully...". In 1911, Auguste Rodin sculpted a bust of Georges Clemenceau in terracotta, which was cast in bronze the following year. However, Clemenceau refused to see it exhibited at the Salon d'Automne, as the artist had wished: "He has always failed me, he whose busts are reminiscent of the finest Roman portraits; he who often guesses features that the model is unaware of; he has given me the appearance of an old grunt. I have no vanity, but if I am to survive, I don't want to do so in the guise Rodin has imagined. Auguste Rodin replied: "Clemenceau sees himself in reality. I see him in his legend.
