CARICATURE OF THE EMPEROR OF HAITI FAUSTIN I Cham depicts Faustin Soulouque and his intendant, who is holding large scissors and a sheet of paper: "(Soulouque's intendant) - Dam, Your Majesty commands me to buy him paper to make him a crown. I took him a sheet of school paper! (The emperor Soulouque) - School paper yourself! Idiot! If you wanted to make an emperor's crown, you should have used big eagle paper! A former slave who became a general in the Haitian army and then president of the Republic of Haiti (1847), Faustin Soulouque (1782-1867) was proclaimed emperor in August 1849 under the name of Faustin Ier. Drawing used to engrave the first of a series of 9 caricatures published in L'Illustration on November 17, 1849 (with a few variations in the layout and caption).
