KUBA KINGDOM - Lot 86
KUBA KINGDOM Democratic Republic of the Congo. Wood, copper, glass beads, cowries, raffia fibers, skin, fur, half-shell. The "Bwoom" helmet mask is one of the three types of royal mask in Kuba mythology. It was used for the funerals of important men, in representations that re-enact episodes from the founding of the kingdom. It can be used for other masquerades, changing its meaning according to the context: it can represent the spirit "Ngeesh" during the initiation of young boys, it can represent the controversial brother of "Woot", founder of the kingdom and first ruler who vied for the affection of his wife "Ngaady a mwaash", it can represent a commoner in his role as an insurgent defying the royal order. First third of the 20th century. H. 30 cm. Note: Our example is similar to the one in the Brooklyn Museum collection (73.178).
