Leather scabbard with two large gilded brass fittings, cut and openwork. Escutcheon knob. B.E. Directoire period (1798). (partly gilded, later scabbard). These sabers were given on April 1, 1798 by order of Schérer, Minister of War, at the request of General Vaubois, to the soldiers of the 3rd company of the 19th ½ brigade de ligne, following the siege of the fort of Corte in Corsica (January 23-February 8, 1798), where, for 45 days, the soldiers refused to surrender. One hundred sabers were made. A year later, 150 men of the 19th ½ brigade were among the "three hundred braves" of the battle of Nazareth, (April 8, 1799), which explains why these sabers have often been attributed to the Egyptian campaign. Nicolas Noel Boutet (1761-1833), director of the Manufacture de Versailles from An II to 1818. Bibliography : - Carnet de la Sabretache 1932.
