The Emperor's Praetorian Guard, it is the most popular regiment of the Grande Armée. Entry requirements were strict, including the need to have distinguished oneself in two campaigns, and to be over 1.70 m tall... Although they were rarely directly involved in combat, they were nevertheless present in all theaters of operation, to be used as a last resort when the situation became critical. Their decisive action at Essling in 1809 is a case in point. Their final stand at Waterloo, on June 18, 1815, was to make them the stuff of legend.
