A long, curious wheelgun with left-hand lock. - Lot 24
A long, curious wheelgun with left-hand lock. Round barrel with round sides, then with five thundered sides, ending at the muzzle with a border and a barley grain. Small flat-bodied lock, left, with internal spinning wheel, signed "Francisco de Lucia", with dog on front. Hand-operated bassinet cover with chased leaf foot. Hound with round foot. Steel fittings, partly line-decorated. Cut-out trigger guard. Cut-out lock plate, signed, with belt hook. Stock flange linking the breech tail to the strong round pommel. Curious walnut frame with a "bishop's crook" stock, carved on the front with a helmet and foliage, and adorned on either side with two cut-out blond horn motifs reinforcing a previously repaired break in the stock. Iron ramrod. Length: 57 cm. E.M. Italy, circa 1790/1800, repairs and small dents to the frame, pitted metal, but a very interesting weapon nonetheless. See Stockel p. 730. These late-made spinning-wheel pistols were probably made in pairs. There is one in the Musée de l'Armée, made by Lepage in 1829.
