Two polychrome carved wood horses said to have come from the Roi de Rome, son of Emperor Napoleon I. Fabric and leather saddlery and harness. Height: 20 and 21 cm. A.B.E. circa 1815 then (one tail missing and one broken tail harvested). Early 19th century. Provenance: - These horses were referenced in the JL Noisiez collection as those of the King of Rome. Similar horses can be found in the young Prince's toys, for which see "Jouets de princes, 1770-1870", figure 50 "Canon et son attelage" with very similar but intoxicating sculpted horses. This carriage, purchased in 1814, was not taken to Vienna when the child left. Biography: Napoleon II, Duke of Reichstadt, King of Rome, son of Napoleon I and Marie-Louise of Habsburg, Napoleon's only legitimate child. After his father's fall, he was confined to a form of gilded imprisonment, still a threat to the Europe of the Congress of Vienna. He died at the age of 20, without issue.
