Rich and magnificent pair of officer's flintlock pommel pist - Lot 4
Rich and magnificent pair of officer's flintlock pommel pistols. Original white-polished round barrels, with flattened tops and thunderbolts, chased with antique-style warriors on feet, foliage scrolls and an animal's head, on a gold background. Silver sights. Breech pins engraved with portraits. Lock plates signed "HENRY à Vesoul" and swan-neck hammers with beautifully chased flat bodies on a gold-amati background decorated with foliage and hunting trophies. Iron trimmings, cut and chased with foliage, interlacing and busts. Counter plates with nude women. Long-eared knobs richly decorated with trophies, figures and foliage. Walnut burl mounts. Crosses with long shafts, partly carved, with crowned thumb pieces. Wooden sticks with iron pastilles. B.E. France. Circa 1770/1775 (slight age crazing to one of the stocks and one of the shafts). Length: 40.5 cm. HENRY : harquebusier in Vesoul, (Haute-Saône), circa 1770. A rifle made by the same harquebusier is in the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature in Paris. Another rifle signed "Henry à Vesoul" with the same decoration and work on a gold background was sold in the Robert Jean Charles sale at Drouot, catalog no. 182.
