Nicolaas VAN DER WAAY (1855-1936) - Lot 217
Nicolaas VAN DER WAAY (1855-1936) An Amsterdam orphan girl knitting Oil on panel Signed lower right 44 x 23 cm With frame: 57 x 37 cm Oil on panel, signed lower right, 17.3 x 9 in, with frame : 22.4 x 14.5 in A native of the Netherlands, Nicolaas VAN DER WAAY was born in Amsterdam in 1855, where he died in 1936. He studied at the Amsterdam Academy of Fine Arts and with the artist Louis Koopman. After several trips to Italy and Paris as part of his apprenticeship, he settled permanently in Amsterdam, where he taught for 33 years. Although he painted portraits, landscapes, ballerinas and interior scenes, by 1900 Nicolas Van der Waay had already developed a passion for a recurring subject in his work: Amsterdam orphan girls. Recognizable by their black, red and white outfits, these young boarders are often depicted in everyday activities, to which the artist breathes great grace. Her treatment of the subjects is reminiscent of the Dutch masters of 17th-century interiors.
