Théodore ROUSSEAU (1812-1867) - Lot 112
Théodore ROUSSEAU (1812-1867) Montmartre quarries, October 1831 Oil on paper mounted on panel Dated 'octobre 1831' lower left 25 x 32 cm With frame: 33.5 x 42 cm We would like to thank Michel SCHULMAN, author of the artist's catalog raisonné, for confirming the authenticity of this work, which will be added to the digital supplement of the Théodore Rousseau catalog raisonné currently in preparation. A certificate of authenticity will be given to the buyer. Expert's note: A surveyor of the plains, valleys and forests of Ile-de-France, Théodore Rousseau "lost himself" for a time in the forest of Montmartre, of which the painting in the Musée du Louvre is certainly the finest example [ill. 1]. But, like his illustrious precursor Georges Michel, he also "lost his way" in the more unexpected spaces of the Montmartre quarries. Dated October 1831 in the painting itself, this confirms the dating we gave these works in our 1999 catalog raisonné under numbers 101, 102 and 103. It is number 102 that we will retain principally for our comparison with its subject but also its treatment: Here, Rousseau moves away from the vegetal to turn for a brief moment to the mineral, which seems to have been shaped by the human hand. This is what makes the painting so interesting, as it demonstrates the disparity of his interests and his research into pictorial themes to which he would never return. Oil on paper mounted on panel, dated 'octobre 1831' lower left, 9.8 x 12.5 in, with frame : 12.9 x 16.5 in
