François-Auguste Ravier (1814-1895) - Lot 61
François-Auguste Ravier (1814-1895) Dark sky at Champrofond, Crémieu. 1866 Dated on the back '1866', apocryphal handwriting. Oil on canvas 24 x 18 cm Unsigned Oil on canvas, dated on the back '1866',apocryphal writing, 9.4 x 7 in. We thank Madame Christine Boyer-Thiollier, a specialist in the artist, for confirming the authenticity of this work. Expert's note : This painting may appear dubious at first glance, as it is unusual! But make no mistake, it is exceptional... The date 1866 inscribed on the back corroborates the evolutionary style of great simplification of the motifs. This last year in Crémieu, before moving to Morestel in 1867, proves that the painter had exhausted the surrounding countryside. He had observed and painted the Champrofond site opposite the town of Crémieu so much, both on site and in his studio, that he retained only the volumes and contours. He schematizes the rocky cliffs overlooking the town of Crémieu to the extreme, in favor of a gap of bright light illuminating the greenery. Everything else is simplified, from the ruins of St. Hippolyte on the left to the foliage. The modernity of the brushwork, with its treatment of the black sky streaked with broad strokes of blue and the pinkish-gold of the clouds, is an opportunity, as he puts it, "to make the bourgeois howl", who demands well-polished landscapes. We see here an example of the daring, courageous and personal painting of painter François-Auguste Ravier, who is 52 years old and still reveling in Dauphin landscapes and skies....Christine Boyer-Thiollier.
