Originally from Flanders, Liévin Cruyl left Ghent for Rome in 1664, where he remained until 1675. He is best known today for his drawings and engravings of the Eternal City, some of which were published as prospectus locorum urbis Romae insignium. Between 1681 and 1684, he was documented in France, where he worked for the Bâtiments du roi. The cabinet des arts graphiques at the Château de Versailles preserves two cavalier views of the palace by the artist, produced in 1684.
