THE VOICES OF SILENCE - Lot 13
THE VOICES OF SILENCE
MALRAUX (André). Set of about 90 clippings in various formats, generally small: parts of typescripts and printed broadsides, corrected by several hands including André Malraux's, with a separate autograph note.
Fragments from his essays originally published under the general title Psychologie de l'art, by Albert Skira from 1947-1949 in 3 volumes (Le Musée imaginaire, La Création artistique, La Monnaie de l'absolu), and reissued in a revised form in 1951 by Gallimard under the title Les Voix du silence.
In André Malraux's handwriting, there are some 25 lines here (and many scattered words): "... the embracing eyes of Bâmyan, victorious over their calligraphy and now seemingly aroused by the luxuriance of the palms, like the powerful Gupta blossom, like the heavy lip of Elephanta's Mahecamourti, will end up in the delicate drawing and overloaded ornamentation of Cambodian bas-reliefs, under the procession of transparent ruin ants." "...if art, in our eyes, still knows great epochs, it no longer knows a golden past. (What time ever equals as peremptorily as ours its talents to the greatest masters?)..." Etc.
Provenance: biologist and ethnologist Jacques Millot. A member of the Académie des Sciences, Jacques Millot was a professor at the Faculty of Medicine, the Institute of Ethnology, the Museum of Natural History and Director of the Musée de l'Homme.
