China, 19th century - Lot 32
China, 19th century Large ink and color painting on silk belonging to a cycle known as the "Water and Earth Ritual (or fast)", Shuilu zhai, depicting various scenes of hell where the deceased are accompanied by Buddhist deities. (Broken, masked or trimmed edges, framed under glass) Sight size: 102 x 61 cm Note: The Shuilu zhai is a Buddhist ritual practiced for the salvation of the deceased. It generally involves a large number of similarly constructed paintings, which also incorporate themes from Taoist iconography. Their number is probably not fixed, depending on the patron's prosperity. Two incomplete series, preserved at the Musée Guimet and of imperial origin, include thirty-seven and seventy-four respectively.
