PAIR OF BRIDLE BITS FROM THE CARRIAGES OF EMPEROR NAPOLEON I - Lot 222
PAIR OF BRIDLE BITS FROM THE CARRIAGES OF EMPEROR NAPOLEON III AND EMPRESS EUGENIE. Made of iron. Brass bosses with imperial coat-of-arms motifs. A.B.E. Second Empire period History and provenance: Referred to as used during the Orsini bombing in the Serena collection, these bits bear the scars of the explosion, an impact and deformations on the bosses. On January 14, 1858, Felice Orsini attempted to assassinate Napoleon III in front of the opera house on rue Le Peletier in Paris. With his accomplices, he threw three bombs in the direction of the imperial carriage. Fortunately, the Empress Eugénie and the Emperor escaped with only minor scratches, thanks to iron plates cleverly inserted in the sides of their carriage. But the bombs killed eight people in the procession.
