MARINE AND COLONIES. - Annuaire de la Marine et des colonies - Lot 92
MARINE AND COLONIES. - Annuaire de la Marine et des colonies. Paris, Paul Dupont, J. Dumaine, 1870. In-8, xxx-(2)-7 [lettered a to g]-(one blank)-996 pp, garnet chagrin, ribbed spine decorated with gilt and cold-stamped fillets with cold-stamped marine anchors in the entrenerfs, double framing of cold-stamped double fillet on the boards embellished with cold-stamped corner fleurons, gilt coat of arms in the center of the first board, filleted edges, gilt inner border, gilt edges; binding tarnished, a little stained with a few tears and rare wormholes (period binding). EXEMPLAIRE WITH THE ARMS OF GENERAL COUSIN DE MONTAUBAN, COMTE DE PALIKAO (gilt iron in the center of the first plate, absent from OHR). He volunteered in 1814, served in the cavalry, notably in Algeria, and was appointed brigadier general in 1851, then division general in 1855. Placed at the head of the Chinese Expeditionary Corps in 1859, his success earned him the title of Count of Palikao (named after a decisive victory near Peking), but the looting of the Summer Palace barred him from the marshalate. Made a senator (1861), he received the Ministry of War in April 1870 and accepted the leadership of the Government on August 9, 1870.
