Chevallier and Pierre ROUSSEL, received masters respectively before 1737 and in 1745. COMMODE in Parisian varnish imitating Chinese lacquer known as Martin varnish, opening with two drawers without rails, decorated with palace scenes, landscapes, horses, gilded bronze frames, falls and handles, resting on curved uprights finished with cambered feet. Stamped twice 'CHEVALLIER' and 'JME' and three times 'P. ROUSSEL' THREE TIMES. Louis XV period. Portor marble top (restorations). H: 86 cm, W: 150 cm, D: 44 cm (added bronzes, repainted uprights) This commode can be compared to a model by Jean Demoulin, commissioned for the apartments of the Duc de Penthièvre at the Château de Chanteloup, now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Tours. The mounts were supplied by Jacques Caffieri. Another lacquer commode with almost identical mounts, from the collection of Christopher Sykes Esq., was sold at Christie's, London, on July 2, 1919.
