VIRGIN OF THE ASSUMPTION in wood carved in the round, with w - Lot 38
VIRGIN OF THE ASSUMPTION in wood carved in the round, with white patina. Standing with her hands crossed over her chest, Mary turns her head slightly to the right. Her hair is loose, falling in wavy locks to her shoulders and back. She is dressed in a soft dress and a mantle, one part of which is draped over her left shoulder and falls under her left arm. Around the globe forming the base, five putti with outstretched wings seem to move happily about, one lifting a flap of the cloak to hide in it. Southern Italy, Naples, attributed to Giovan Domenico d'Auria( ?/1573) and possibly his workshop, third third of the 16th century Height: 166 cm (some worm damage and slight accidents) This large sculpture of the Virgin of the Assumption is similar to the Virgin on the altar of the di Soma family chapel in the church of San Giovanni a Carbonara in Naples (fig.). The figure of Mary has the same soft, pulpit-like treatment, the same small, closed mouth, the same dimpled chin; the same supple draping, forming crumpled, almost metallic folds whose design plays with light and shadow to create volume. The putti's bodies are also depicted in such a way as to convey the suppleness of their skin, creating chubby shapes. To complete this comparison, our sculpture can be compared with another marble Madonna offered for sale in 2020 (Aguttes - Neuilly, lot 19, sale September 22, 2020), also attributed to the Neapolitan sculptor Giovan Domenico d'Auria. Book consulted: Ricardo Naldi, Giovanni da Nola, Annibale Caccavello, Giovan Domenico d'Auria. Sculture ritrovate tra Napoli e Terra di lavoro 1545-1565, Naples, 2007.
