SATYRE MENIPPEE de la vertu du catholicon d'Espagne et de la - Lot 160
SATYRE MENIPPEE de la vertu du catholicon d'Espagne et de la tenue des Etats de Paris. S.n.s.l., 1595. In-8 on 17th-century vellum (slight, pale wetness, paper missing from margin of pages 69-70). 244 pp. A major political pamphlet in prose and verse against the Estates General convened by the League in 1593 to elect a Catholic king of France, the Satire Ménippée came to the aid of royalty. Thanks to it, Henri de Navarre became Henri IV. At a time when the League was seeking to entrench the Infanta of Spain, this satirical, collective and miserly work came to Henri IV's defense. The satyr began to be written in 1593 in Tours, and the manuscript circulated under the cloak before being published in 1594 under the title "la vertu du catholicon d'Espagne". The common title Satire Ménippée was not added until the 2nd or 3rd edition. Further editions were published in 1594-95. Satire at the end of a Baroque and Rabelaisian century had several authors, all of them Catholics, two of them former Protestants. They belonged to the anti-Guise and anti-Liga "political" party, and wished for royalty. Gallican in tendency, their authors rejected foreign interference, Spanish for the Catholics and English for the Huguenots. They always wished for peace in the kingdom. Pierre LE ROY, author of the virtue of the Catholicon, inspired the plan of the work, Pierre PITHOU revised the whole and wrote Aubray's harangue, Jean PRESSERAT, Gilles DURAND, Florent CHRETIEN, Nicolas RAPIN contributed to the success of the work. Other unknown authors may also have contributed. A good copy.
