CURIOSA - [MERCIER de COMPIEGNE] Eloge du sein des femmes. A - Lot 40
CURIOSA - [MERCIER de COMPIEGNE] Eloge du sein des femmes. A curious work in which we examine whether it should be uncovered, whether it is permissible to touch it, what are its virtues, its form, its language, its eloquence, the countries where it is most beautiful and the surest means of preserving it. Guein et chez les Marchands de Nouveauté, 1801. In-12 period green morocco, smooth ornate spine, two gilt fillets on covers, gilt edges, gilt paper endpapers (binding skilfully and discreetly restored). Second edition. IV and 140 pages. Claude-François-Xavier Mercier, known as Mercier de Compiègne (born Compiègne, Oise, August 1, 1763; died Paris, 1800), was a French writer, editor and compiler, best known for his satirical and libertine works. L'Éloge du sein des femmes, first published in 1800, is a reworking of an earlier work that had already seen three editions: Les Tétons (1720, Amsterdam), Éloge des tétons (1746, Frankfurt), then a reprint of this volume in 1775, in Cologne. It is this third version that Mercier de Compiègne has reworked, lightened and enriched, to bring us this fine anthology of what various poets have written about the breast.
