18th century FRENCH COLLECTION after Gabriel GRUPELLO (1644- - Lot 85
18th century FRENCH COLLECTION after Gabriel GRUPELLO (1644-1730) Diane and Méléagre Pair of statuettes in bronze with light-brown patina. Square marble base with gilded bronze mount. Total height 32 cm NOTA : Of Flemish origin, Grupello was a pupil of Artus Quellinus (1609-1668). After his apprenticeship, he traveled to France and helped produce the sculptures for the grounds of the Château de Versailles, then under construction. Back in Brussels, he enjoyed a distinguished official career in the service of Charles II and then Charles VI. This iconography is taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses. The goddess Diana, furious at not having received a gift from Oeneus, King of Caledonia, sends a ferocious boar to ravage her lands. The valiant Meleager hunts it down and, with the help of his companion Atalanta, kills it with an arrow. Méléagre is shown here carrying the head of the animal he is about to offer to his beloved.
